Uses of CO2 Laser in Dermatology

The carbon dioxide (CO2) laser is widely used in dermatology due to its precision and effectiveness in treating various skin conditions. It works by emitting an infrared light that is absorbed by water in the skin, leading to controlled vaporisation of tissue.

Common Uses:

  1. Skin Resurfacing – Treats fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, and sun damage by stimulating collagen production and improving skin texture.
  2. Scar Revision – Reduces the appearance of hypertrophic scars, keloids, and surgical scars.
  3. Wart and Lesion Removal – Effectively removes viral warts, seborrhoeic keratoses, and other benign skin growths.
  4. Pigmented Lesions – Treats conditions such as lentigines and melasma.
  5. Skin Tightening – Helps in mild skin laxity by promoting collagen remodelling.
  6. Actinic Keratosis and Precancerous Lesions – Used to remove sun-damaged areas that may develop into skin cancer.
  7. Xanthelasma and Syringomas – Removes cholesterol deposits around the eyes and benign sweat gland tumours.

How to Prepare for CO2 Laser Treatment:

Proper preparation is essential for achieving optimal results and minimising side effects.

Pre-Treatment Instructions:

  1. Consultation and Skin Assessment – A dermatologist will evaluate your skin type, medical history, and suitability for the procedure.
  2. Sun Protection – Avoid excessive sun exposure for at least 4 weeks before treatment and use a highfactor sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher).
  3. Discontinue Certain Skincare Products – Stop using retinoids, hydroxy acids, and other irritating skincare products at least 1 week before the procedure.
  4. Antiviral and Antibiotic Prophylaxis – If you are prone to cold sores (herpes simplex), a preventive antiviral medication may be prescribed.
  5. Hydration and Skincare Routine – Keep the skin well-hydrated and follow a gentle skincare routine in the weeks leading up to the treatment.
  6. Avoid Blood Thinners – Medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, and certain supplements (such as vitamin E and fish oil) should be stopped a few days before the procedure (if medically appropriate).
  7. No Recent Skin Procedures – Avoid recent chemical peels, microneedling, or other resurfacing treatments to prevent excessive irritation.

On the Day of Treatment:

  • Arrive with clean, makeup-free skin.
  • Wear comfortable clothing, especially if treating large areas.
  • If sedation or numbing cream is used, arrange for someone to drive you home.
