Patient Information

Pre-Treatment Instructions
1. Avoid Sun Exposure:
- Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning (sun, tanning beds, or self-tanners) for at least 4 weeks before your IPL treatment.
- – Wear protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) daily on the treatment area.
2. Discontinue Skin-Sensitising Products:
- – Stop using retinoids, AHAs/BHAs, or exfoliating products 5-7 days before your session.
- – Avoid harsh chemical peels or other laser treatments on the treatment area for at least 2 weeks before IPL.
3. Medications:
- – Inform your provider of all medications you are taking, especially antibiotics, blood thinners, or photosensitising drugs.
- – Avoid taking aspirin, ibuprofen, or alcohol 48 hours before the procedure to minimise bruising.
4. Skin Condition:
- – Ensure the skin is clean and free of lotions, makeup, deodorant, or creams on the day of treatment.
What Happens During an IPL Session
1. No Downtime:
- IPL is a non-invasive procedure with no downtime, allowing you to return to most daily activities immediately after the treatment.
2. Treatment Duration:
- A typical IPL session takes approximately 30 minutes, making it a convenient option even for those with busy schedules.
3. Anaesthetic:
- – Topical anaesthetic is not required for IPL and may reduce the effectiveness of the treatment.
- – Instead, a cooling device is used during the procedure to minimise discomfort and keep the treatment area comfortable.
Post-Treatment Instructions
1. Avoid Sun Exposure:
- – Use sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) daily to protect treated areas.
- – Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 2 weeks post-treatment.
2. Manage Redness or Swelling:
- – Mild redness and swelling are normal. Apply a cold compress if needed.
- – Avoid hot baths, saunas, or strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
3. Skin Changes:
- – It is normal for coffee ground-like pigmentation or dark spots to appear in the treated area. These will gradually flake off and settle within 1 week as the skin heals. Avoid picking or scratching at the treated skin.
4. Skin Care:
- – Use gentle, hydrating skincare products. Avoid harsh exfoliants, retinoids, or scrubs for 5-7 days.
- – Keep the treated area moisturised with a non-comedogenic, gentle moisturiser.
5. Avoid Heat and Irritation:
- – Do not apply hot water, heat packs, or tight clothing to the treated area for at least 48 hours.
6. Hydration and Healing:
- – Drink plenty of water to support skin healing.
7. Monitor Skin Response:
- – Some discolouration or flaking is normal. Report any unusual swelling, blistering, or prolonged discomfort to your provider immediately.
Follow-Up Care:
- – Multiple sessions are often required, typically 3-4 sessions every 4-6 weeks, to achieve optimal results.
- – For facial thread veins, top-up sessions may be required every 1-2 years to maintain results.
