Q-Switched Nd:YAG 1064nm Laser in Dermatology

Uses in Dermatology:

The Q-switched Nd:YAG 1064nm laser is a versatile laser treatment widely used in dermatology. It works by delivering high-intensity pulses of energy to target pigmentation, tattoos, and other skin concerns while leaving surrounding tissue unaffected. The 1064nm wavelength penetrates deeper into the skin, making it suitable for treating conditions in individuals with darker skin tones.

Common Uses:

  1. Treatment of Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) – reduces excess pigmentation caused by acne, burns, or other skin injuries.
  2. Melasma and Sunspots – Helps fade unwanted pigmentation and even out skin tone.
  3. Tattoo Removal – Effective for removing black and dark-coloured tattoos.
  4. Skin Brightening and Rejuvenation – Stimulates collagen production and improves overall skin clarity.
  5. Vascular Lesions – Reduces the appearance of broken capillaries and redness.
  6. Acne Scarring – Helps lighten pigmented acne scars and improves skin texture.

What to Expect on the Day of Q-Switched Laser Treatment:

  • The treatment area will be cleansed, and protective eyewear will be provided.
  • A numbing cream may be applied depending on the area being treated.
  • The laser will be delivered in short pulses, producing a mild snapping or tingling sensation.
  • The procedure usually lasts between 10-30 minutes, depending on the size of the treated area.
  • Some redness or mild swelling may occur immediately after treatment.
  • Cooling or soothing gels may be applied to reduce discomfort.
  • Normal activities can usually be resumed immediately, although sun protection is essential.

How to Prepare for Q-Switched Laser Treatment:

  1. Avoid Sun Exposure – Protect the skin with SPF 30 or higher for at least 4 weeks before treatment.
  2. Discontinue Certain Skincare Products – Stop using retinoids, acids, and strong active ingredients one week before treatment.
  3. No Recent Tanning – Avoid sunbeds or fake tanning products to minimise the risk of pigmentation changes.
  4. Shave the Area (if applicable) – If treating an area with hair, shaving may be required before the procedure.
  5. Avoid Blood-Thinning Medications – If medically appropriate, stop medications like aspirin or ibuprofen a few days before treatment.
  6. Stay Hydrated – Keep the skin well-moisturised before the session.

How Many Sessions Will Be Required for Treating Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH)?

  • The number of sessions required depends on the severity of the pigmentation and individual skin response.
  • Typically, **3-6 sessions** are needed, spaced **4-6 weeks apart**.
  • Results are gradual, as the pigmentation fades with each session.
  • Consistent sun protection and proper skincare post-treatment are essential to prevent recurrence.
