Patient Instructions for Long-Pulsed Nd:YAG Laser Treatment for Plantar Warts

Before Treatment:

1. Consultation & Assessment
– Dr Sega-Hall will assess your wart(s) to determine suitability for Nd:YAG laser treatment.
– Inform Dr Sega-Hall of any medical conditions, medications, or history of poor wound healing.

2. Pre-Treatment Care
– Keep the area clean and dry before the procedure.
– Avoid self-treatments (e.g., salicylic acid, cryotherapy) for at least one week before laser treatment.
– Do not shave the area before the procedure.

3. Pain Management
– A local anaesthetic will be injected just before the laser treatment to minimise discomfort.
– You may take over-the-counter painkillers (e.g., ibuprofen, paracetamol) 30 minutes before treatment (if approved by Dr Sega-Hall).

4. Footwear Considerations
– Wear open-toed or loose-fitting shoes on the day of treatment to avoid pressure on the treated
area.

After Treatment:

1. Treatment Plan & Follow-Up

  • The treatment will require approximately four sessions, spaced every four weeks.
  • Attend all follow-up appointments as scheduled by Dr Sega-Hall for optimal results.

2. Immediate Post-Treatment Care

  • The treated area may appear red, swollen, or blistered-this is a normal response.
  • Keep the area clean and avoid touching or picking at blisters if they form.

3. Wound Care

  • Dr Sega-Hall will prescribe Mupirocin (antibiotic ointment) to apply twice a day for two weeks.
  • Wash the wound daily with Hibiscrub soap as instructed.
  • Keep the area dry for at least 24 hours after treatment
  • Change dressings daily if needed.

4. Pain Management

  • Continue taking painkillers if necessary. Avoid aspirin, as it may increase bleeding.
  • Avoid standing or walking for extended periods immediately after treatment if discomfort persists.

5. Avoidance of Irritants & Water Exposure

  • Do not use harsh creams, lotions, or wart treatments (e.g., salicylic acid) unless advised by Dr Sega-Hall.
  • Avoid excessive sweating, soaking in hot water, or swimming until the wound has fully healed.

6. Preventative Measures

  • Keep feet dry and wear breathable shoes to reduce recurrence.
  • Avoid walking barefoot in communal areas like pools and locker rooms.

If you experience signs of infection (excessive redness, pus, warmth, or worsening pain), contact Dr Sega-Hall immediately.
